In September 2000, the first Mellow Me Out was opened on Fulton Avenue. We had 1,000 sqft and every inch of space was utilized. I have to laugh when I think about the break room in our first spa—more like a broom closet with a piece of material as the door. Every day after closing the spa, I would load up my old Cadillac with piles of laundry that I would take to the laundry mat at 6am the next morning to be ready for another day of clients. We had a staff of 8 therapists and everyone pitched in to get the job done.
My past career was passing out peanuts as a flight attendant and hundred other jobs along the way. Learning to manage employees and juggling the many facets of a business has been an amazing experience. Making many mistakes, I learned the hard way. But my grandpa always told me “when you get bucked off the horse… pick yourself up, dust yourself off—and get back on the horse.” I’m still getting back on that horse frequently, but I just try not to make the same mistakes twice.
Now, we have 3 locations — Downtown, Fulton and on campus at Sacramento State University. We also have a washer and dryer now and a break room with a real door on it. J As the company has grown, so has our client base reaching a very diverse group of the community. Some clients prefer the downtown location with an urban feel elegantly designed in a business high rise overlooking the beautiful Plaza. Many of our clients enjoy the eclectic, colorful vibe of our Fulton location with its 14 theme rooms and Cabana Lounge for private parties. Of course our Sac State students and faculty find the convenience of an “express spa” on campus to be perfect for their hectic school/work schedules. We are also planning an expansion to the Elk Grove area, coming in 2008.
We have won numerous Readers Choice awards through the years because you are treated like family, not a number! Our staff works very hard at creating an experience where you feel welcomed and can leave your worries behind. Now, don’t you think its time for “you” to call us and say “Mellow Me Out?”
